Karola has been a volunteer for Sustrans for many years and has helped in schools across Brighton and Hove supporting our Sustrans Bike It project at playground sessions, running Dr Bikes and coming on bike rides.

Since lockdown Karola has been supporting a project that provides bikes and learn to ride/confidence sessions for women and children living in a Refuge escaping from domestic abuse and violence. We organised a city wide appeal for donations of bikes and Karola has been involved with collecting the bikes and moving them to a community workshop. She did this by walking around the city and cycling or walking the bikes to get them to the workshop. Karola has spent many hours servicing the bikes by pumping up tyres, fixing brakes, sorting the gears, cleaning, oiling parts and on some much more.

Karola runs Dr Bike sessions at the Refuge where she services the communal bikes available for the children. Many of these bikes are left outside and are extremely neglected. Karola is happy to explain how she’s fixed the bikes to the children who find this really interesting. They love hearing what Karola’s done to their bikes and seeing where they can help her too.
